Unit Awards and a Full NVQs Overview
Unit Awards
NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) represent a 'whole job role' however, as we all know, a 'whole job' is actually made up of smaller roles or skill sets. NVQs are designed the same way with the full NVQ representing the 'whole job role' and the Units that make up the full NVQ are the smaller roles or skill sets.
These Unit can stand alone and can be achieved separately from the full NVQ. This means that you as a candidate do not have to complete the full NVQ if you only want to demonstrate competence against one part of the whole job role, the stand alone skill or Unit of competence.
As an example:
- The Learning and Development NVQ at Level 3 is designed for those who 'tread the boards' as trainers, those who deliver the actual training sessions and material. It is made up of some Mandatory Units plus some Optional Units. A separate skill that many trainers at Level 3 are expected to have are Assessment Skills, hence one of the Units is the Unit A1 - Assess Candidates Using a Range of Methods. This is also known as the NVQ Assessor Award. It may be that a Manager has to assess people to a set of standards and also is required to demonstrate this skill but not be a full on trainer therefore, the Manager can take the Unit A1 as a separate Unit Qualification, a separate skill.

Management NVQs
Management NVQs (national vocational qualifications) are aimed at people in management roles across all occupations and sectors of employment.

Like all original NVQs, these new management qualifications are still competence based meaning that it is connected to the candidate's ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work however, by being linked to the QCF, the Units within the qualification are now given 'Credit Values' and permit a greater flexibility in tailoring the qualification to the needs of the individual and/or organisation.
