Occupational Health and Safety Practice NVQ at Level 3

The Occupational Health and Safety Practice Level 3 NVQ qualification structure has been revised to take into account the revised, now approved, National Occupational Standards.

In addition, the consultation showed that the existing qualification structure was not suitable with units HSS5 and HSS7 as mandatory units. These were not suitable for all job roles at this level and are better placed as optional units.

The addition, as an optional unit, of HSS9 has been requested as this will be most useful to training providers and employers providing staff to supervise learners in the workplace. The revised structure will provide a flexible structure and increased opportunities for progression.

The Occupational Health and Safety Practice Level 3 NVQ has 7 Units, 5 mandatory plus 2 from a list of 4 optional units.

5 Mandatory Units

• HSS1 - Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
• HSS2 - Develop procedures to safely control work operations
• HSS3 - Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
• HSS4 - Promote a healthy and safe culture within the workplace
• HSS6 - Conduct a health and safety assessment of a workplace

Plus 2 Units from the following Optional Units

• HSS5 - Investigate and evaluate health and safety incidents and complaints in the workplace
• HSS7 - Make sure your own actions within the workplace aim to protect the environment
• HSS8 - Review health and safety procedure in workplaces
• HSS9 - Supervise the health, safety and welfare of a learner in the workplace
