Acting as a Mentor
This is an example course and as such this course can easily be tailored to your specific organisational training or skills need. Training courses can be specifically developed for your people in Management, Sales, Human Resources, Personnel, Health and Safety and other 'soft skills' areas.
Aim:
To develop the skills of a Mentor so that support can be provided in the development of others.
Objectives:
By the end of the training, staff will be able to:
- State the importance of being aware of the desired outcomes of the member of staff’s development;
- Help individuals to identify individual training and development needs so that a programme can be tailored to meet their needs;
- Develop listening skills;
- Develop questioning skills;
- Develop summarising, reflecting and clarifying skills;
- Provide feedback on progress, pointing out where improvements are needed or could be made;
- Know how to provide guidance to others;
- State how coaching skills can be used to help the individual’s development.
Who should attend?
This training is for staff who will act as Mentors. These will normally be those with some responsibility for the management of others.
It is however, important that all those who attend want to carry out the role of a Mentor.
Duration:
1 Day
How will the training be delivered?
A mixture of methods will be used. These will include group work, discussions, working in pairs, and individual work as well as direct input from the trainer.
What needs to happen after the training?
The Mentor needs to develop the skills by putting them into practice. Evaluation of the training will be reflected in the development of the individuals who are being mentored
An alternative is to consider a programme of development in either the form of one of our Management Programmes such as our Developing Manager Programme, or one of the ILM Certificates such as the Certificate in First Line Management. There is also the added option of a Management NVQ.
